I'll know it when I see (smell) it!!
Hey guys, Joe A. here with another one for ya’! Alright, I’ve got a foundational question for you. It’s one of those classic fragrance conversations that seems simple on the surface, but the deeper you sniff, the more interesting it gets. We’ve all heard people say, “That’s a gentleman’s fragrance,” or “This smells really gentlemanly.” And sure, we all kind of nod like we know what that means. There’s this shared, unspoken understanding floating around in Frag Comm.
But the more I explore this hobby, the more I realize something: fragrance itself doesn’t actually have a gender. Notes don’t come stamped with “Male Only” or “Do Not Spray Unless Wearing Cufflinks.” So that brings me to the real question… If scents aren’t inherently gendered, then what actually makes something “gentlemanly”?
Is it the ingredients? Lavender? Oakmoss? Vetiver?
Is it the feeling it gives off, that mature, composed, well-put-together vibe?
Is it the emotion it sparks?
Is it tied to formality, elegance, restraint?
Or is “gentlemanly” just another one of those frag terms we toss around because it sounds classy and makes us feel like we’re wearing a monocle?
As for me… I can’t fully define it, but like a fine wine, a good barbecue, or grandma’s homemade apple pie… I’ll know it when I smell it.
What say you, guys? What does “gentlemanly” mean to you? What are the characteristics? The thresholds? Is it a vibe? A mood? A note breakdown? A memory? And which fragrances make your personal list of true gentlemanly greats? Love to hear from 'ya!
