What's Your Goal in Your Hobby?

"Mr. Gibbs, we have our HEADING...."

As I delve deeper into this hobby called "Fragrances", I wonder about the meaning or purpose of it all! Not to dwell too much on a simple pleasure, I look to where I invest my finite amount of time in this world. We start with the idea of "smelling good"; we move into "leveraging scent as a superpower", we start a tidy little collection, and then.....and then....

That's why I believe in having a "heading". Having a "heading" with any hobby essentially refers to having a clear direction or goal in pursuing that hobby. It involves defining what you want to achieve or experience through your hobby and setting a course to accomplish it. The purpose of having a heading with a hobby can vary widely depending on individual interests and motivations, but generally, it serves several key purposes:

  1. Focus and Direction: Setting a heading gives clarity on what you want to get out of your hobby. It helps you focus your time, energy, and resources on activities that align with your goals, preventing aimless wandering or boredom.

  2. Motivation: Having a clear direction can provide motivation to engage with the hobby regularly. When you have a specific goal in mind, whether it's mastering a new skill, completing a project, or achieving a certain level of proficiency, you're more likely to stay committed and motivated to put in the effort required.

  3. Progress Tracking: A heading provides a benchmark against which you can measure your progress. By establishing milestones or objectives along the way, you can track your development and see how far you've come, which can be incredibly rewarding and encouraging. Think about taking pictures of your collection as it grows!!

  4. Personal Growth: Pursuing the hobby with a heading can be an avenue for personal growth and self-improvement. This applies to any types of hobbies, whether you're learning a new instrument, honing your cooking skills, or exploring photography, setting goals within your hobby allows you to challenge yourself, expand your capabilities, and develop new talents.

  5. Meaningful Enjoyment: Having a heading with your hobby can deepen your enjoyment and satisfaction derived from it!

With fragrances, I could master the skill of writing reviews. I could build a new display, with better arrangement and more efficiency of space with my bottles. As for level of proficiency, this could extend in many directions, maybe I could be a historian, or maybe an analyst of current affairs in the market, or I could seek to become a professional perfumer! In any case, when you have a purpose behind your activities, each moment spent engaging with your hobby becomes more meaningful and fulfilling.

What say you Guys? Has anyone given any thought to this concept? Or am I off my rocker? It's not just something for Level 8s to wrestle with you know!! ...Or, quite possibly, I'm overthinking this and just need to "enjoy the journey" What do you think, love to hear from ya' !!!
