$100 Starter Collection - Spring 2024
Share
Hey guys, Joe A. here with another one for ya’! When I first started getting into fragrances back in my early to late teens, I didn’t have much money at all. A $500 starter collection? Not even in my universe back then. So I wanted to put something together that’s realistic for the younger crowd (and honestly anyone on a budget) who still wants a solid, seasonal lineup without going over a crisp C-Note (yes, even after Uncle Sam takes his slice!)
Spring is all about fresh starts, clean air, optimism and stepping out of winter’s funk into something brighter. So here are four fragrances I believe cover the main situations you’ll run into this season: versatile daily wear, office/school, date nights, and nights out, all under $100 total.
(Versatile / Dumb Reach)
John Varvatos Artisan Blu (75ml ~$25.82)
Retailer: FragranceNet — requires the 40% off coupon to hit this price
Artisan Blu is an easy-going, breezy, anytime spring scent that blends crisp citrus with aromatic herbs for a refreshing coastal vibe. The top has that splashy lemon and herbal zip, the heart leans airy and aquatic and the base brings a subtle woody warmth.
Why it works for Spring: It’s clean, bright, and energetic, perfect for those days when the weather finally warms up and you just want something uplifting.
Why it fits the category: This is the “don’t think, just spray” choice when you need one bottle that works for school, errands, the gym, or casual hangs.
(Office / School / Formal Daytime Wear)
Versace L’Homme (100ml tester ~$22.67)
Retailer: FragranceNet (coupon needed) — OR better deal at Jomashop for $19.99
Versace L’Homme is a straight-up classic masculine scent that has this warm, spicy citrus blend wrapped in woods and subtle florals. It’s confident without shouting and elegant without feeling dated. Bergamot and lemon open things up, the heart leans spicy with carnation and patchouli, and the base anchors everything with rich woods and musks.
Why it works for Spring: The citrus-spice combo cuts through the season’s humidity while staying refined.
Why it fits the category: Perfect for office days, class, interviews, and anytime you want to smell put-together without drawing too much attention.
(Date Night / Netflix & Chill)
Banana Republic Tobacco & Tonka Bean (75ml ~$19.99)
Retailer: Burlington — in-store find only
This one brings a sweet, cozy warmth that feels intimate but not heavy, perfect for cool spring evenings. You get a soft tobacco sweetness up top, creamy tonka in the heart, and a velvety base that feels comforting and inviting.
Why it works for Spring: Spring nights still get a little chilly and this brings that warm blanket vibe without the heaviness of winter gourmands.
Why it fits the category: For close-quarters moments like dates, movie nights, relaxing indoors, this one absolutely hits.
(Clubbing / Night Out / Loud)
Al Haramain Detour Noir (100ml ~$26.40)
Retailer: Amazon — prices may vary by seller
Detour Noir packs a punch with spicy-sweet energy. The top mixes bergamot and crisp apple, the heart leans into cardamom spice, and the base settles into vanilla and musk with a long-lasting trail. It’s bold, noticeable, and built for nights where you want your scent to stand out.
Why it works for Spring: The sweetness pairs well with warming weather, and the spice keeps things exciting on cooler nights.
Why it fits the category: Perfect for going out to clubs, bars, parties, or anywhere you want a fragrance that won’t get drowned out.
What say you, guys? Have you gotten your nose on any of these? What’s been your experience? If you haven’t tried them yet, which one are you thinking of grabbing first? And for the budget-challenged folks, does a list like this help? Love to hear from ya!
